Word of the Day: SHORE

Howard Leslie Shore (born October 18, 1946) is a Canadian composer who is notable for his film scores.[1] He has composed the scores for over 80 films, most notably the scores for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies. He won three Academy Awards for his work on the first trilogy, with one being for the original song "Into the West", an award he shared with Eurythmics lead vocalist Annie Lennox. He is also a consistent collaborator with director David Cronenberg, having scored all but one of his films since 1979.

Bit of a mixed bag today. On the one hand, we've got some nice words in the grid, but the cluing is a bit wonky. Take HASON for instance. Now I've always been a big fan of subatomic particles, so this one is right at home with me (6A: Is wearing). Don't know what the deal is with that totally non-sensical clue, though! Guess somebody was asleep at the wheel.

Then there's SASH. (1A: Accessory for Miss America). Why would Miss America walk around with part of a window attached to her?? Unless the rules for that beauty pageant have evolved significantly since the last time I watched it, that seems like a weird way to reward the contestants. Am I so out of touch? No. No, it's the children who are wrong.

Yes, OBVIOUSLY it's a real film. Not 100% sure about the ass part though.

HI-NT must be the new, super advanced edition of Windows for businesses (4D: "This answer is an anagram of "THIN," for example). That's pretty obvious, so I don't know why the clue is some weird meta nonsense. Oh, and does everyone remember ASS E.T., the unauthorized Turkish version of Spielberg's 1982 opus where the alien is played by a donkey (2D: Valued possession)? I know I do! At least that clue makes sense, as my understanding is that copies of the film are quite rare. Probably have to put a big deposit on it when you rent that from Movie Madness.

I haven't driven down SU AVE. recently but the last time I did it certainly made me feel (1D: Charming and confident). But maybe that was just my shampoo?

Ugh. That's about all the fake misparsings I can think of. Hey you know what's great with ginger and wasabi? Cats!
