Word of the Day: BRIE
Brie (/briː/; French: [bʁi]) is a soft cow's milk cheese named after Brie, the French region from which it originated (roughly corresponding to the modern département of Seine-et-Marne). It is pale in color with a slight grayish tinge under a rind of white mold. The whitish moldy rind is typically eaten, with its flavor depending largely upon the ingredients used and its manufacturing environment. (Wikipedia)
I think I like this. It's not quite enough to earn a BRAVO, but it was good for a lark [1D: Channel for the Real Housewives franchise]. There's some fairly decent stuff here, to be sure, first and foremost of course is RADII [6A: Diameter halves]. For inexplicable reasons consecutive I's are, in fact, the key to the Rube Goldberg machine that is my heart. It's just a thing.
Circling back, I'm also questionably pleased by the preponderance of BR's in this puzzle. Aside from the aforementioned BRAVO, there's good ol' BRIE, fine cheese/actress as the case may be (seriously, go see Room; it's bizarrely delightful considering its subject matter) [1A: Gooey cheese]. So much better than her sister Camembert. Then, right next door, we have BRER [5D: ____ Rabbit], who is now a resident of the BRONX [5A: Yankee Stadium Locale, with "the"]. Something something children's lit in a NY accent.
With all this BR-ing, it's a wonder it's apparently warm enough to have a RODEO [2D: Bull-riding contest]. Seems like the kind of EVENT you might want to postpone until the weather gets a little nicer [7A: Facebook creation]. Then again, if it's happening on Facebook I guess it doesn't matter.
